    Nomadland

    ★★★★½

An exceptional film and an absolute must see. Much of it feels similar to Into The Wild due to the scenery and the quiet tone. Every shot is so beautifully thought out if could be the last. Ludovico Einaudi’s music adds to the pensive atmosphere of the film.

  • Lost in Translation

    Lost in Translation

    ★★★★½

Lost in Translation has something that many films lack, space. The moments of peace add an intensity to the dialogue. The concept of two people meeting, forming a deep connection and then just moving on with their lives is beautifully sombre.

    Mektoub, My Love: Canto Uno

    ★★★½

There isn’t a gripping storyline in 'Mektoub, My Love' but somehow I was still entranced, it was a combination of the cinematic summer haze, the beautiful setting in Southern France and the raw display of youthfulness.

However there is definately a male gaze...There is an element of female objectification because the male nudity is much more discreet and infrequent than the shots of the women.

  • Velvet Goldmine

    Velvet Goldmine

    ★★½

Velvet Goldmine is strange, impulsive and wild, similar in style to The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The music and costumes, specifically of the male lead Brian Slade, seem to be heavily influenced by David Bowie.

The soundtrack was good, as was the acting, Ewan McGregor especially.

Beneath the eccentricity of Velvet Goldmine I think there is a deeper message, that encourages self identity and self expression.
