The garden knew she loved him, for her laughter stirred the rose leaves

Anna May Wong’s portrayal of an abandoned mother is heartfelt and bittersweet, just a glimpse of the great acting talent she possessed (she was only seventeen here!) Her performance is much less operatic and physical than many of her silent-era contemporaries, she modulated her movements and acted with her face in a way that seems very ahead of its time. Two strip technicolor must have been so breathtaking for 1922 audiences - I only wish the original score had survived the century.
