  10 Things I Hate About You 1999

  As far as high school comedies go, this sure is a good 'un. 4/5 stars for that category, specifically, 3.5 stars overall. Some things go wrong, but it still feels so right. This is also one of those screenplays that everyone can quote verbatim after only one viewing.

  Each time I watch this little gem, I have new questions. This time around, I had these:

  1. Why is there a nerd-bicycles-off-cliff gag? I'm confused. Was this just 90s high schooler…

  A Complete Unknown 2024

  For a film that seems to take itself so seriously, I found the stakes to be a little anticlimactic, and bits and pieces of the story somewhat muted. Maybe that's the point, and maybe that's why so many folks love it; personally, though, I left feeling like it had too soft a landing.

  As with almost all music biopics, I thought it covered way too much and far too little, all at once.

  That being said, I loved the world…

  I just had a lot of fun, which was unexpected considering I knew nothing besides that this was a drama about a sex worker. Will definitely rewatch, which I can't always say about Oscar fodder.

  Also: there's an interesting discussion to be had comparing and contrasting the portrayal of sex work/female empowerment in this and POOR THINGS. Someone remind me to have this discussion someday.
