Through this entire thing I kept thinking about movies that did it better. Tár- psychological insanity, older powerful woman driving herself insane by her desire to have an affair with an intern and degrade zoomers; Piaffe- erotic in an truly insane and awesome way, not afraid to dial in on the puppy/horsegirl stuff; half of Almodovar’s work- actually transgressive and makes good use of Antonio Banderas being hot; Eyes Wide Shut... idk, probably a lot more.

    As for Babygirl… I…

I’m not sure how many stars I’m feeling, but I came away with a ton of thoughts. I’ll start off by saying this is probably the first horror movie I’ve seen where I’ve been like “damn, I relate!”, but as an epileptic with a history of night terrors and doing weird shit in my sleep, it was extra eerie and troubling- which I definitely don’t consider a bad thing. It was cool to see a movie about possession and demons…

There is no WAY anyone is giving Lina Romay a one star review. I would die for her. I would happily watch nothing but her thrashing on a bed, in the bath and on the floor for 2 hours. And let’s be real, if you’re enjoying this movie it’s probably not for the plot, it’s for the vibes, Lina’s perfect body, intense stare, and insane lower lip (and, if you’re me, all the outfits you wish you owned). The beautiful filmography and misty forest is lovely, and the opening sequence is exquisite.

If I’m honest with myself, I wish I liked this movie more just because the discourse about it every single year is SO stupid and I don’t want the most annoying people I know to have a point. Not a sophisticated opinion, but it’s true. It’s occasionally cute comfort food with the standard dated, bad 2000s jokes. I love Emma Thomson crying to Joni Mitchell as much as the next girl. Very relatable. I generally hate big dramatic gestures but when Colin Firth does it it’s fine sorry I don’t make the rules.
