    Life

    ★★★½

On release, Life was disappointing because it is too derivative of Alien and its impressive cast is wasted on thin characters, making the film feel like a generic effort. On rewatch, while those issues persist, the film manages to distinguish itself from its influences enough to be a satisfying sci-fi horror in its own right.

    Friday

    ★★★½

With its cast of cartoonish characters coming in and out of scenes and the small rotation of locations, Friday feels like a stage comedy. And it succeeds at the hilarity with a mix of quality gags, iconic performances, and silly quotables. Where it lands on the comedy, it wobbles on the subtext and story - it's clunky storytelling but stylistically interesting.

Ace Ventura is Johnny Bravo. Except he actually gets laid.

It's the classic Carrey conundrum: he's a force of nature that not only sucks in the audience but the entire film along with it. He's funny but the character and story fall by the wayside to his crazy antics. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective has plenty of hilarious moments driven by its iconic lead despite ultimately having aged horribly in the targets of its derisive humour. It's a jarring rewatch, having misremembered this as a kid's film, after watching it as a kid.

    King Kong vs. Godzilla

    ★★½

King Kong had such great vibes - he was just chilling on his island before being dragged off to a streetfight with a superpowered dinosaur yet he always had a pep in his step.

King Kong vs. Godzilla manages more interesting subtext than Godzilla Raids Again, something that made the original so impactful, by almost breaking the fourth wall to lampoon entertainment executives looking to engineer a colossal face-off between these monsters regardless of the consequences. That aside, the film…
