The story is lackluster, Depp is annoying and so are the characters, but nothing is as horrifying as hearing your name said dozens of times in a movie.
That said Burton's signature aesthetic and over-the-top production is as it's peak in this film. With great sets, effects and props. The majority of my praise is for this.

I think the black and white film makes the texture of the set and scenic elements really stand out, making everything feel very gritty and grounded, which really works when it goes into surreal elements.
