Hedorah's wife (yes, really)
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
One of the most unnerving final sequences I’ve ever seen. A woman replaced almost instantly after her suicide, the family she was once a staple of walking into the autumn leaves, their silhouette suggesting she never left, or never existed in the first place. Here Varda paints a brightly colored portrait of one of the most vile characters in film. Unbelievably cocky, confident, “loving,” but devoid of any actual care. His love and his happiness is, ironically, for him and…
Violently cute! This time the Kaiju gore gets extra surreal, though unfortunately only a few minutes of the film contain any. The rest (kinda) is reused footage (blegggghhh). There’s still a few entertaining scenes carrying the movie, but they’re dying soldiers compared to everything else :/
I will say that the submarine hijinks were a highlight! Underwater action in any Gamera film is a treat, but this one has a little yellow submersible darting around in it, which is unbelievably adorable!! And visually interesting in a movie that mostly isn’t. (Save for blue screen squids, my god the blue screen squids)
TUBI started playing this right after Videodrome and It's hard to express how appreciated that recommendation was.
