All fairy tales are bright and beautiful, but also surreal, dark and deranged. No one has combined these essential ingredients as perfectly as Jacques Demy in Donkey Skin. That said I don’t think anyone has made a better film than this, so I’m probably not to be trusted.

Look. This is a stone cold masterpiece. On the surface it’s a superb musical, witty, wildly entertaining, every song is a classic and Judy Garland is absolutely incredible. However, beneath the surface it’s twisted and depraved, a bunch weirdos behaving insanely and having a great time doing so. I always have a blast watching it.
