Phantom Thread 2017
A treat to see this sold out, at the Trylon, on a warmly battered 35mm print. Outside of its compositional mastery, I think Phantom Thread investigates the pathologies which generate erotic freedom to such a thorough going degree as to transcend them. We would be foolish to try and distance ourselves from Woodcock in the way he tries to distance himself from Alma. Why deny ourselves?

Exactly the sort of fun I was hoping to have. This film is distinguished by its own half-light, which neatly reflects the same sort of obscurity each of these characters has in relation to the truth. And I love the bathos in believing in a perfect marriage, however corrupted the world of realpolitik may be. Wonderful timing.

My fourth viewing and easily my favorite. Maybe it was finally seeing it big, maybe it was that my memory of the novel has vanished, maybe it’s that I relaxed and finally quit trying to solve for the fang, maybe it’s that our own time eerily resembles Doc’s. But probably it’s that I know we can never end the conspiracy — but maybe we can pull someone out of it, maybe we can negotiate someone else’s freedom.
