  Finally a very well directed German movie - but I feel like the script lets it down somewhat. Many of the characters’ decisions start to feel like plot machinations in the second half and the film does not seem to add up to a coherent thesis. I am a massive fan of Vinterberg’s “The Hunt”, so I was a little disappointed here. Still shows that you can make interesting, well-directed movies within the German movie system if you want to. Leonie Benesch is great!

  EDIT: Some thoughts in light of current events. I know I’m reeally in the minority on DTRT so I felt obligated to put some more thought into my review.

  What bugs me so much about the way this movie portrays race relations and police brutality is that the ending manufactures a dishonest dichotomy and forces viewers into a choice between seeing Mookie’s actions as inevitable or appearing heartless or even outright racist. That this is misguided appears even more clear…
