To preface anything I say next, I enjoyed Mickey 17 — it was entertaining, immersive, mildly funny at times. But I came in with high expectations, and ultimately felt its satire and criticism of our world today was pretty shallow, and lacking subtlety (especially Mark Ruffalo’s character). From a sci-fi perspective it felt similarly limited — a wasteland world with cute but dangerous roly-polys doesn’t exactly spur the imagination. But kudos to Bong-Joon Ho for choosing to make this, and WBD for throwing a ton of money at it — albeit strange moves on both sides.
