The Elephant Man 1980
An adaptation of the Joseph Merrick story, incorporating dramaturgical ideas from Herzog’s brilliant 1974 Kaspar Hauser film. In typically American boldness, the parabolic narrative is developed more intensively than in Herzog’s moral realism, almost transforming the story into a Grimm-like fairy tale. The existentialist elements become particularly visible in the shift of the film’s subject focus: while Herzog’s film examines how the cold environment treats the perpetually socially othered Kaspar Hauser, Lynch’s film turns into a heart-wrenching melodrama about the way Merrick himself is affected by the public.
