Wes Anderson isn’t as insufferable as some people say now, nor was he ever as brilliant as people claimed in the aughts. He’s just a classic white gen x director, indulging his sensibilities to the point of fetish. Asteroid City marks the next step of his descent into self-parody. But once you accept that — and it’s always wise to accept a director on their terms — it’s almost an enjoyable experience.
I hate the contrived dolly shots. I hate the meta-meta…
I was supremely disinterested in the premise of this movie — the title, the nostalgic journalism stuff, zzzzzzz — but it turned out to be one of the smartest romcoms I’ve seen. James L Brooks’ script about a newsroom love triangle is so thoughtfully constructed. Holly Hunter is our subdom heroine; Albert Brooks is the menschiest romantic lead; William Hurt is such a cunt, but you see the appeal.
A romcom for people who enjoy SNL and all other well-meaning but ultimately unfunny comedy. A lot of people, apparently.
The protagonist is a comedian; his Pakistani parents think he should quit stand-up and as a dispassionate viewer I strongly agree. He and his romantic interest (Zoe Kazan) have the opposite of chemistry. Again, I find myself siding with his parents; they're just not right for each other.
You know you’ve fucked up when it falls to Ray Romano to save your movie, but so it is. Holly Hunter and him play Zoe’s parents and, fortunately for us, they totally steal the show.
