  Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 2001

  Watching these with my sis as she patiently answers all of my questions as a non-HP book reader. Plotholes abound in the mechanics of the Wizard universe!

  It works really well as a standalone kids adventure movie, and reminds me of Jumanji and the Goonies but with lots of Brit sitcom humor mixed in. There's some great practical effects in these early films that are really cool and fun, and hold up far better than the CGI. Those kiddos act their hearts out!

  I think people are being a bit too generous with this movie. The acting is good, but the writing is dramatic, self-indulgegent, cluttered with every cliche about being a black artist tortured by individual and collective trauma selling your visual history to the man. In a forced attempt to fabricate an emotional experience for the viewer, it almost reinforces the very stereotypes it tries to liberate itself from.

  Also? Dumb name for an art show.
