First of Mizoguchi’s films I’ve ever watched.
The Japanese cinematography in the 50s and 60s is just insane. Every frame is a painting because it reveals the entire scene and cuts just become unrequired for the spectator to comprehend what is happening. In Sansho The Bailiff, this framing is used to transmit an intimate feeling between the protagonists.
