A fun action 80’s Godzilla romp with some unique themes about environmentalism sprinkled throughout. While the main subtext of the first Godzilla is still prevalent in this film, they also add a unique layer to the pie by introducing Biollante to this universe. A plant-Godzilla-human hybrid created to destroy Godzilla. Whether this was a good idea or not though is up for the viewers to decide.

There is something about this McDonagh joint that doesn’t fully connect with me. It’s mostly the writing, I personally thought it was pretty sappy. I like swearing in movies, but the way it was used here was really obnoxious. The sudden flashback scene with the daughter saying: “I hope I get raped” and then does, was so unnecessary and over-dramatic. Army of Shadows 1969
Was really looking forward to this based on the premise and, of course, it being on the Letterboxd top 250. Sadly, this did not quite hit the mark for me. I like seeing this dark tale of heroism, but all the characters did little to drive the “suspense” I was supposed to be feeling throughout each scene. Felt too long and repetitive as well. The score was fine at best, but I really didn’t like the screen wipes used throughout the film. A lot of artistry used here, but I don’t really connect with the overall vision.
