Banned in Canada for ‘anti-British sentiment’? Had to watch it. Turns out, exposing looted African art is still a bit awkward for the former empire. Who’d have thought? Short, sharp, and still painfully relevant. Cheers, Nii Kwate Owoo, for saying the quiet part out loud.

Rocío Mesa’s Secaderos feels like Pan’s Labyrinth meets David Lynch but set in the sun-drenched landscapes of Granada, where I was born. It is a hypnotic blend of magical realism and rural coming-of-age drama, following a young girl who sees the tobacco fields as a world of wonder and a teenager desperate to escape.

Mesa captures the beauty and mystery of the Andalusian countryside, where the real and surreal blur effortlessly. The film lingers in quiet moments, full of nostalgia and strange magic. I love Rocío Mesa’s vision, Secaderos is a dreamlike, hauntingly beautiful film that stays with you long after it ends.

“I’ve Soiled Myself Again” by Jonathan Buck is easily my favourite short film of 2024. In just three minutes, it blends comedy, a bit of horror, and a thought-provoking concept as a man confronts parallel versions of himself. Josh Harris gives a brilliant performance, and the whole thing is sharp, clever, and leaves you thinking long after. Jonathan Buck is definitely one to watch!
