The great Boethius once said "It's my belief that history is a wheel. 'Inconstancy is my very essence,' says the wheel. "Rise up on my spokes if you like, but don't complain when you're cast back down into the depths. Good times pass away, but then so do the bad. Mutability is our tragedy, but it's also our hope. The worst of times, like the best, are always passing away".

I think he also said that pigeons were really just rats with wings.

ZEF - The Story of Die Antwoord

    ★★★

For a band that likes to talk about how "raw" and unfiltered their aesthetic commitment to ZEF is, this felt very polished and not super authentic to me. Was hoping for this to be a little more vulnerable about some of the unsavory things I've heard about ninja and yolandi. Alternate title coulda been "Portrait of the Artist as a Middle-Aged Pimp"

This movie was seriously an excellent portrait of a man in a mid-life crisis trying to make it as a rapper. Also, the soundtrack fucking rules.

Dee Jay has so much soul, damn. His monologues throughout the film are truly moving. Sometimes, we encounter his wisdom in moments of raw honesty and emotional vulnerability as he reflects on the existential dread of hustling to survive, something most of…

    Miami Connection

    ★★★

This movie was pretty fuckin wild. A rock band that does taekwondo, sings about friendship and loyalty, and "controls territory" (whatever that means) in Miami gets into a conflict with some sort of ninja Mafia because the lead singer of the band is in a relationship with a ninja guy's sister. The morality of the movie is extremely warped and odd, kinda like an alien wrote a movie about being cool in the 80s. I Highly recommend it.
