The movie was ultimately a miss for me. I felt the pacing and writing was inconsistent, and I don’t really like Clint Eastwood’s performance. I think his five-words-a-minute deliveries are part of the pacing issue. I also felt like the themes, while interesting in a vacuum, are not particularly well executed. This might be in part because a lot of them are presented through interactions with the writer, which was a plot device I didn’t really enjoy.

Phenomenal dialogue writing and acting. I enjoy the artistry of expressing the themes of the movie, but I find them a little too nihilistic. From what I could gather, it seems like the screaming lambs are representative of helpless victims. Even when you can save one, you are just stalling its inevitable slaughter. This movie was a bit different from the other two Eggers’ films that I have seen, but I still really enjoyed it. The acting, sets, and lighting were all phenomenal. I was extremely impressed with Lily-Rose Depp, and thought Nicholas Hoult and Bill Skarsgård were great. Two themes, one of unending appetite, and the origin of the evil we encounter, were particularly well presented by the performances.
