i would love to give this movie 5 stars but 4 is already generous because unfortunately the source material itself was highly flawed and...just not very good. i think this movie did a good job of cleaning up the meandering subplots of the book, and it did the transcendental job of creating the iconic mahjong scene, which is objectively the best scene of the entire film.
