The Lives of Others 2006
Unbelievably beautiful. Told confidently by honest actors, who provide a genuine sense of belief in the story they are telling.
It is a risky business trying to portray "evil" characters (in this case it is Wiesler, a forgiving Stasi officer) as absolved of their guilt by acting in the interests of others, even against their own beliefs. The Lives of Others does this practically perfectly. Never begging the audience to trust the enemy, but rather letting them trust out of choice.
