Was I tricked into a loving this film because of the soundtrack? Possibly. But then you add in the styling, locations, and casting and I thought, maybe there’s more to this…and I was right. The way Saltburn “edged” us using restraints is criminally stimulating, whether that’s in Rosamund Pike’s perfect comedic timing, Jacob Elordi’s disgusting beauty or Paul Rhys’ perfectly executed British sass; the tension was perfection, I couldn’t help but want more. And then, when it became clear that…
Epic. Lawrence of Arabia may be a test of patience -it’s almost four hours long- but is made easier to watch via the breathtaking cinematography, and the inevitable conversations around geography and history. The sneakily queer-coded characters, make you appreciate just how progressive this film would have been during 1962 and yet the casting of white men in brown face is a sad reminder of how “Worldly” stories have been steered by the white perspective. I love a film that makes me google, and Lawrence of Arabia left me wanting to immerse myself in the people, places, and culture of this pinnacle time in history.
A dramatic Italian dinner party filled me up and left me teary eyed. I wanted nothing more for it all to work out for Primo and Secondo, and in a beautiful demonstration of brotherly love it did. The food looked incredible, the guests were colourful, and the set was like a stage. The plot showed off the tenants of Italian cooking; passion, all-consuming, and family at its core. Simply delicious.
