Decent enough crime drama but doesn’t keep the momentum going long enough to make for an exciting watch. Good performances all around, though. Some good song choices for soundtrack. Biggest takeaway - I ain’t ever stepping foot in West Virginia again.
I am partial to any movie in which the protagonist must save their dog. First time I’ve seen Birney’s work and I am blown away. Took a bit to get into it but once we’re past the exposition and that video game dude comes out into the living room, it’s mesmerizing. This reminds me of the way I saw the world as a child - part story book, part computer video game. It feels otherworldly but totally real at the same time. I really respect directors that can achieve such interesting and memorable visuals. The campfire scene with TVMan was my favorite part of the film.
A solid romantic comedy, featuring every trope (good and bad) of its genre and time. I laughed, a lot. Jane Fonda and Wanda Sykes are unexpectedly hilarious together. But, watching this one as an adult, exactly twenty years after its initial release, I truly cannot fathom how they got away with calling J.Lo fat. A whole generation of women have body dysmorphia because of this movie. Since when is having a nice ass a problem? Yikes.
The first half hour was achingly slow, but the pick-up and ultimate surprise ending makes it all worth it. I love impassioned speeches on the nature of man and religion and this movie delivered; I almost clapped a few times! Ralph Fiennes…what can I say that hasn’t been said? He never disappoints. I absolutely loved Carlos Diehz and his portrayal of Cardinal Benitez. What a gem. Well rounded, fleshed out characters, humor, mystery, controversy - I smugly think of the people this movie pissed off and smile. I hope they learned something.
