High Hopes 1988
Despite their differences, particularly around having children, Shirley and Cyril’s relationship feels deeply solid because of their shared warmth, humour, and dedication to understand each other. They have their disagreements, but the way they laugh together and find joy in the everyday keeps them connected. Really enjoyable dynamic to watch! Shirley is so light and has such an open minded outlook whilst remaining strong in her convictions, which balances well with Cyril’s more cynical world views. The general atmosphere of the film captures the thatcher era really well too.
