Great cast, from Bogey and Bacall (smoldering!) to Edward G. Robinson as—surprise—a mobster, to the wonderful Lionel Barrymore and finally Claire Trevor in an Academy Award-winning turn as the drunken moll with the heart o’ gold. All that and a hurricane, too! A solid classic that delivers.

My doubts started with the annoying voice. The Donald Trump-ish character played by Mark Ruffalo added to my skepticism, because who wants to see more of him or anyone even remotely reminiscent of him? The uneven tone of the storytelling only added to the problems. I didn’t hate it, but let’s just say I checked my watch more than once. And I liked it far less than Parasite—also less than Snowpiercer and The Host. Still, I maintain that Bong Joon Ho is taking bigger creative risks than almost anybody, so props to you, BJH!

First rewatch in a very long time, and very much needed. If ever a movie was chicken soup for the soul, this is it. I did find myself feeling more impatient with Izzy than I was when I first watched in my twenties. How can she not get it?!?!?

This movie and Local Hero gave Peter Riegert a little piece of my heart forever.
