Maybe it’s that I’m watching it so soon after 5 To 7, an age gap romance between adults, but seeing Adult David slide up on Actual Child In School Uniform Jenny robbed this of any of the charm & style it was trying for.

The Book of Life 2014
Watched with Hiro, age 7 & 1/2. Shame Coco came out & ate this movie’s lunch. Where Coco had original music, this one had… a cover of Mumford & Sons? But Coco didn’t have a Luchador priest elbow-dropping bandits, so swings & roundabouts.

The Wild Racers 1968
Shot guerrilla style, mostly without permits by Daniel Haller and Roger Corman, this is an odd little relic. I feel like they tried to make a racing film, and instead made a New Wave film. Incredibly fast cuts, and loads of them, for everything from racing to dinner scenes. Most of the dialogue is voice over, so the same conversation will continue over multiple locations. Incongruous sound effects, repeated lines, spliced in frames… it’s art by accident, with the barest whiff of a story. I can’t recommend it, but I kind of want to discuss it.
