No wonder Erland Josephson is said to have rejected a role in Jaws 2 stating he’d rather "have intellectual battles with Liv Ullmann than fight with some shark".
Ullmann’s performance is unbelievably multifaceted yet realistic and her chemistry with Josephson made this an addictive and painful watch.
The final episode - which carries the poetic title In the Middle of the Night in a Dark House Somewhere in the World - could not have summarized the mess of Marianne and Johan’s relationship more beautifully imo.Would choose this over Marriage Story (2019) any time.
