Had the pleasure of rewatching this on the big screen in Paris with an audience of students. As the lights dimmed the girl next to me turned to her boyfriend and said "I've never seen a Hitchcock movie before." 90 minutes later, when Rains turned back to the house as the music swelled, she turned back to her boyfriend and shouted "My God, I had no idea that's where it was going!"

The Set-Up 1949
While Robert Wise directed a handful of films that went on to be classics, nothing really comes close to his work on The Set-Up. Despite being a boxing picture, stylistically the film feels as though it belongs to a more recent era (the camera never stops moving throughout). The story is focused, the textured lighting and production design gives the film a strong sense of place, and the performances from Ryan and Totter are perfect for the material. Bleak and fatalistic, just like noir should be.
