    Somehow both hopelessly exposition-dense and incomprehensible at the same time. Tenet is the most Nolan-y Nolan film yet, a sci-fi spy thriller devoid of compelling characters or meaningful stakes. In a mostly plodding two and half hours of underexposed, generally muddy filmmaking, somehow very little is revealed or accomplished besides rehashing much of Nolan's typical pre-occupations including elaborate metaphors for filmmaking and artistic production, and a desire to put it all on the line for cherubic off-screen children.

    I honestly don't think that some attempt to Trump-ize the central conflict here would have worked. As some kind of cautionary tale about the creep towards authoritarianism and empire, I think the film would be politically burdened and fail its loftier ambitions, though that's very clearly the film many wanted from this.
