1984 Oscar winner for best short documentary. I am currently working on a short documentary with similar subject matter, that seems to be discussing some of the very same issues that plague these stone carvers in 1984, it's interesting to see how despite the fact 41 years has gone by since this documentary was released that many of these problems or decline in craft and quality still exist and/or have become more pressing. Instruments of a Beating Heart 2024
Watched on Youtube.
Enjoyed this small view into a classroom halfway around the world from the US. I did not know this was part of a feature film, The Making of a Japanese, until looking it up, and I think that helps explain why it felt so contained to the school. I think in a short format I wanted to learn a bit more about Ayame, see her home life, just connect a bit more to her. Still all around a sweet short doc.

Dazed and Confused 1993
Watched at the Hollywood Theater in Portland.

The soundtrack is incredible, the ensemble cast is so much fun, and so so so many great quotes from this one. God. I wished I'd seen this sooner, but sitting in an audience watching this with a full crowd was so much fun, and feels like the perfect way to…
