“La vida es como la espuma, por eso hay que darse al mar.”

A film so impactful I'm struggling to put it into words. It says so much. About life, about growing up, about society, love, relationships, nature, freedom, death and the search for meaning. Every line serves its purpose, the film earns every shot and every minute. Gael Bernal, Diego Luna and especially Maribel Verdú are incredible, their relationship feels so natural throughout. Whether that be…

How is ‘horror’ shown in Apocalypse Now?
Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now shows ‘the horror’ of imperialism by drawing heavily on the idea of the ‘Heart of Darkness’, inspired by Joseph Conrad’s 1899 novella by the same name. ‘Heart of Darkness’ is ‘a parable for all times and places’ (Hochschild, 2019). Absolute cinema. Despite what the media will tell you Frank Heffley is not a bad father and deserves more respect. Rodrick gets clowned but Matty Healey has Löded Diaper posters on his walls. "Whatever you say, love" is also an all timer line.

Everything Stephen Graham touches turns to gold

+ side note, but I think it's very telling that just as I went off letterboxd and looked at twitter I saw that weapon Ashton Hall touting his 'tips for men' and ridiculous morning routine where he's treated like a god. It's so easy for young men to fall into those circles and I'm so happy I had people to stop that from happening to me, because it's all too easy.

This was sick. Dev Patel can really do no wrong, an even more impressive undertaking after hearing about the circumstances this film was made under. Clearly influenced by Kill Bill, Guy Ritchie, Kingsman and so many more, yet it's still very original and certainly very memorable. I hope this makes money so Dev can make even more films and doesn't get stuck in director jail.
