I figured I was due for a rewatch since this has influenced several hit movies of the last year or two! Lots of mad scientist stuff at the beginning which is ok, but once all the girlies have their Super Crack party and start exploding, it doesn't stop being a wild wild ride until the credits roll. Elizabeth is a queen! She should have as many pretzels as she wants (I may have eaten a few pretzels during my viewing).

A teen delinquent acquires a sawed-off shotgun and a girlfriend with an expensive drug habit, and that's just the start of the criminal exploits of El Jaro. So far this is the most action-packed of the quinqui films I've watched, with knife-fighting pimps, guys getting mowed down with machine guns, a fascist teen getting punched into a pond, and a massive gathering of teen gangs who are all ready to tear a barroom apart. There's plenty of sex, drugs and petty crime packed into this one. Youth gone wild!!

This has been on my watchlist forever and I decided to finally watch it today since it’s playing tonight at the Leather Archives & Museum in Chicago as part of their Fetish Film Forum series. Sadly, I am not in Chicago, but I sure wish I could see it with that crowd.

This was so much better than I expected. Juha is a man who starts going to a dominatrix to process through and find catharsis over his wife’s drowning death,…

Forgive me reminiscing a little in this review. It’s funny to think of teenage me being so locked into this movie. What was I getting out of this at the time? Many hours spent debating and teasing out the themes, to the point where I really credit this movie as part of my development as a film lover. Part of it is that Lost Highway seemed enigmatic and mysterious, and frustratingly close to being unlocked into some 1:1 literal meaning.…

My takeaway is that despite the gruesome details, this story is basically a standard noir story. It’s hard to know who to trust; characters lie and act hypocritically and in ways that are philosophically inconsistent. Viggo’s new organ-generating performance artist Saul Tenser is basically Philip Marlowe or Doc Sportello, floating through a world full of forces that he doesn’t totally comprehend, buffeted by parties who want to charm, trick and use him, unaware of the secret motivations that occasionally provoke…

The first time I saw Cruising was in the mid-90s. I’d probably read about it in a zine, which is where I learned about most of the weird shit I liked at the time. Luckily, the small video store I walked to most days had a surprisingly diverse selection, and it was no problem to bring home the grainy VHS copy and watch it in my basement lair. The film made a big impact on me. I’d never seen a…
