  Madame X – An Absolute Ruler 1978

  Expected the worst kind of artificial political satire in the beginning, but once we go to sea the film completely loses the plot in most ways (good & bad). Finds many a seductive image on the trip, but still kind of a patience tester. Weird discrepancy between the dimestore exotica vibe of characters and costumes and the eclectic (harsher, but I'm only assuming: with complete disregard for context) use of non-western music. But maybe it's just the magpie-style approach to music, sound & language in general. Propably best watched as we did: half asleep/adrift, with at least 30min lost at sea.

  (It's really strange how perfectly the most common way you can see Sato's movies from the 80s and 90s today - as a file ripped from a DVD scanned from a VHS - fits his visions of media transformation and transgression.)
  This was disturbingly calming and liberating, even hopeful?
