  Loved this when it first came out & enjoyed it again 20 years on. It treads a fine line between pretty grim drama & absurd black humour which some might find a tad messy, but I quite liked that murkiness. Gary Lewis in particular is fantastic & the film is almost worth watching for his coffin carrying scene.

  I quite enjoyed Kenneth Branagh’s last two Poirot films but really disliked this one. Possibly partly because I like The Hallowe’en Party, to which this bears very little resemblance, but I also struggled with the direction, cinematography and writing, and found the whole thing an annoying mess. For me, it was trying to be a horror, a ghost story and a detective tale, but ended up devoid of scares, atmosphere and intrigue. A damp squib in the palazzo.
