I am currently half watching this in a hotel room in the desert on MeTV presented by House of Svengoolie and I kinda feel like this is the best and only way to see this absolute fever dream. Potentially the best night of my life.
“When they answer the call for their country… know what you’re asking them to do.” - Ray Mendoza
I was fortunate to attend an A24 preview screening with a mixture of press and veterans, and Ray was very open about how directing a particular scene in the film triggered his own PTSD. To say that the film is an unflinching portrayal of trauma feels almost too small for the scope of what it truly conveys - both the minutiae of war…
Like that time I watched the “Before” trilogy backwards, except this time with more rape and less ambiance.
The cinematography in this is so good it literally killed a man (the honest to God actual cinematographer… no, I’m not kidding). Some of the shots in this are so gorgeous they’re nearly incomprehensible.
