The sax wailin’ noir hero is one of the funniest genre tropes. This movie absolutely delivers in the third act but it’s sorta unpleasant for the first act and a half to watch and listen to.

Road House 1948
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The first half of this movie plays like a proto hangout movie. Jefty’s Road House is on my list of best bars in cinematic history and Ida Lupino is at her smokiest as its crooner. Cornel Wilde is a bit of an oaf and Widmark is at his campiest here but I’m an absolute sucker for the shootout in the fog in the last act. First rate cinematography and tension. Was rad to see this on a nitrate print — my first.

Saltburn 2023
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The first two acts of this movie were fun. The photography is stunning, Linus Sandgren rules (plus who doesn’t like an aspect ratio gimmick?). The last act of this movie takes a hard turn into silly camp that I’m sure many people will like but was a turn off for me. It’s an unfortunate tonal shift for the worse. Aspires to the great heights of Talented Mr Ripley and Cruel Intentions and falls quite short I’m afraid. Lacking the wit, danger and charisma of its obvious influences.
