It’s not that deep. I’m not a film critic. I just enjoy movies.

I think my favorite part about any of Buster Keaton’s films is his ability to get away with the most absurd. Take The Navigator, for example: in the beginning, we’re told of two warring nations duking it out on the high seas, and a group of spies are attempting to destroy their rival nation’s vessel. Pretty big deal right? It sure is, except despite their great lengths to shipwreck the vessel (such as kidnapping the captain), none of that context…

I think if you go into this expecting Keaton’s usual style of non stop slapstick and gags, I’d completely understand why this one might come across as one of his “weaker” efforts — though I’d have to disagree with that notion entirely. It tackles some heavy issues…

Overall enjoyable, but the pacing was moving at 100 miles a second. It lacks the subtlety of Hitchcock’s later work, and there’s not much depth to any of the characters. Who are they? I have no idea. For the build up it did have, the ending sped right on through it. Not bad, though.

Interesting how Buster Keaton named the film after himself.

“Maybe he was arrested for speeding,” and then cutting to Keaton sleeping at the helm of his carriage going at sloth speed is peak comedy.
