    I think my favorite part about any of Buster Keaton’s films is his ability to get away with the most absurd. Take The Navigator, for example: in the beginning, we’re told of two warring nations duking it out on the high seas, and a group of spies are attempting to destroy their rival nation’s vessel. Pretty big deal right? It sure is, except despite their great lengths to shipwreck the vessel (such as kidnapping the captain), none of that context…

    I think if you go into this expecting Keaton’s usual style of non stop slapstick and gags, I’d completely understand why this one might come across as one of his “weaker” efforts — though I’d have to disagree with that notion entirely. Underlying the comedy of Buster Keaton’s portrayal of a madly in love, spoiled rich kid having a go at the outdoors is a refreshingly complex character arc (in comparison to Keaton’s other work).
