I do not understand how this film hasn’t got a cinematography nom at the oscars, every. single. shot. is absolutely breathtaking as well as the colour palette and contrast between light and dark, it creates a really visually stimulating film.

Ralph Fiennes’ performance is impeccable, i feel like every piece of dialogue holds such a deep purpose, heightened by the gripping score.

The film presents really interesting topics and a theatrical insight into the church and how it runs, using this dramatic process to delve deeper into ideologies of religion, duty, power and loyalty.

This is truly one of my favourite films ever.

quite an interesting storyline, which never seems to provide us with any tense action, and instead plays the role of social commentary on morality, haunting memories and finding yourself. I thought the repetition of birds was interesting- possibly a comment on a feeling of freedom and peace, away from the grave robbing, that the protagonist can’t reach. It has a gorgeous aesthetic and score, quite typical of film festival films, and i enjoyed the hints at the supernatural however i did think it took a while to get started, but hey that often is the case with slow cinema films

Forewarning: i am writing this review coming from the point of view of never watching the play so i can’t compare it to that.

First impression- for an almost 3 hour film i was relatively engaged, the songs were fun, Grande and Erivo played their characters well and the sets were nice to look at.

However… the whole thing was quite generic, obviously for a mise-en-scene heavy film the cinematography and editing had to be quite simple otherwise it could…
