The Killer 2023
Film buffs will scoff when I say that this was my introduction to Fincher (no, I still haven’t seen Fight Club). While well executed, this film felt very safe and didn’t add anything surprising or new to the hired-gun-tale-as-old-time narrative arc. I found The Expert’s monologue entertaining and pithy but a lot of the The Killer’s inner dialogue also felt somewhat unimaginative. This guy really loves the Smiths!!

You could pull a still from almost any timestamp in this film and I’d frame it and hang it on my wall. Beautiful shot after beautiful shot woven together by captivating editing makes for a visual feast in an otherwise banal setting. Haunting vignettes and complex character studies shape a narrative exploring the choices we make with the time we have left.
