The film is more thematically complex than the book and there's some interesting commentary going on, BUT...
It's a bit much at times. Plus both Mickeys in the movie are unbearable to watch, listen to with that awful accent, or even root for as characters. For fans of the book, it's tough to watch if you loved the book's portrayal of the characters.
