I like this film a lot more now as an adult. When I was a child, I got really stressed out by being unable to parse why they were speaking Japanese AND living in a city that resembles Prague with fake German written on everything. Looking at the reviews this seems to be exclusively a “me” problem.

Nice symbolism. A bit thin otherwise.

The scope was grand. The filmmaking was lovely. Adrian Brody gave it his all as usual. Yet it never coalesced into a compelling or fascinating work. I don’t think it’s memorable. At no point was I more absorbed by the story and characters than the film stock. The whole film feels like a beautiful but empty ball gown. The cinema of 2024 never fails to disappoint.

Also, really pissed me off reading the *epic* amount of absolute blowhard reviews on here for this film. My god guys. I’m a cinema studies grad student too. Save it for the fucking term papers.

This film is so profoundly shitty I have to assume it is that way on purpose. Interminable, vapid, and a total waste of time. Much like Shoenbrun’s first film, TV Glow isn’t doing anything. Watch TV, be on TV, remembering Are You Afraid of the Dark? (sorry I mean The Pink Opaque) isn’t the horror show so thought at the naive age of 11. Go figure. I noticed that too, but it never occurred to me to make a whole movie out…
