The Naked Kiss 1964
BAM! Quite possibly my favorite opening scene of my 31 years…….don’t tell Bay of Angels! Went in expecting some sort of noir mystery and was pleasantly surprised by the surreal character study/small town drama that played out…..just what a unique bonkers movie. Once the Venice canal daydream happened I was like YES YES take me to the MOVIES!
Honestly for as much pulp and insanity as there is I found myself absolutely gutted emotionally by the portrayal of social isolation…

The Silence of the Sea 1949
The family cannot help letting love slip out through the cracks in their wall of silence, after proclaiming her love for all human creatures the young woman takes pleasure in brutally killing the mosquito. Truly an insane first for Melville and Decaë, the way they get shadows to jump off a screen gives me euphoria (see the opening of Le Doulos!!!). A lot of what became Léon Morin in here and definite Clouzot vibes. Seriously recommend watching rn if you wanna have a good long examination of just how complicit you might be in your everyday interactions/figure out when you want to speak vs stay silent.

Jef Costello is a bad driver and even worse at parking! He sure is great at riding the metro though! A movie that proves all loner dudes have the same apartment, though Jef really spruced it up with those Evian bottles. JK! I love u Melville!
