    i took a film class in college, and when we were assigned to write a paper about any movie we wanted, this was the first film i thought of. i did my best to craft what i considered an intellectual and academic argument with all the fancy vocabulary words and terminology. after all, it is a wes anderson movie, and i wanted to achieve that same level of finesse that can sometimes come off as 'pretentious.'

    yet, the words i…

    amélie the whole movie:  :}

    wonderful characterization. i wish every "minor" person i meet in my life would get an amélie style introduction. amélie likes to see the minute details other people miss, and this film makes me love little things as she does.

    i personally find it impossible to dislike anything in this flick. a movie that urges me to like people.

    god, there's something really strange and a little off-putting about the way the characters look in this. i don't know if i can exactly say that it's fully in the uncanny valley, but it's at the very least in an uncanny ditch. however! everything that's not the faces of the characters looks pretty neat! there's a lot of incredibly excellent transitions and matching in its crosscutting, and some of the more actiony segments look incredibly impressive.

    if there was ever a movie that was spectacle turned into substance, it'd be 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). it is an endless stream of geometry, color, and what would soon become cemented as some of the most iconic shots in the history of cinema. constantly during my viewing i would think: "holy shit, it's that thing!" or "oh shit that's from this?" to think that i can have those thoughts about a piece of media that's over half a…

    before starting this review, i've looked at some comments and reviews from other people to try to get a better grasp of what all of this was really about. i understood at least a reasonable chunk of the messages i feel it was trying to convey, especially those regarding grief, but there are very clearly large portions i either had no context for or simply didn't grasp on a first viewing. as such, this review is based heavily on my…
