    Bicycle Thieves

A classic example of Italian neorealism cinema. Made in 1948, the setting is true to (or very close to) the actual economic state of Italy at the time. In a depressed economy, the main character Antonio is seeking work like most of his neighbors. As realism style dictates, we are not shown any of his inner thoughts or monologues; rather, we can only follow him through his search and experience his situation extrinsically. Antonio's slow downfall into a criminal lifestyle is shown by turning to petty crime as he grows more desperate to keep his job.

    ★★★★½

    - my second Bombay cinema film

    - a good unraveling of plot and interconnection between characters

    - did not defy social or gendered norms, but didn't overly perpetuate them either (surprising, as a 1950s film)

    ★★★

    - first piece of Bombay Cinema I've seen

    - story and characters had a lot of potential: story was heavily politically engaged, and involved insurgency and minority unrest in militaristic India. Characters were funny and mysterious

    - these elements were shadowed by the obsessive, stalker-ish "romance"

    - heavy sexist overtones to the romance as well
