GoodFellas 1990
Marty drops yet another slab of prime rib on to our plates. Ray Liotta is a great babyface to this cast full of greaseball heels. He gets his shots in here and there but when you put him up against Pesci and De Niro and all the other psychos in this one he feels approachable and a little tragic, even if he goes along for it all.
I don’t know what distinguishes this in peoples’ minds from Scorsese’s other mafia…

Not just a dorm room classic, which is what this had been to me until now. I forgot how hard they abused those CCD sensors, there’s some truly heavenly shots of street lights and signs with all that good chromatic aberration and vertical bloom. mwah mwah mwah

perfect follow up that concretizes all of the raw and abstract notions put forward by the first movie. they delved so much deeper into the specifics of the universe (the giedi prime sequence is some of the finest sci fi world building ever put to film) without getting lost in it. the core conflict shines through and paul’s ascendancy is portrayed so so well. cannot wait to see how they tackle Messiah
