  Here’s what I will say for The Fabelmans: Everytime it depicted the actual magic that happens when everyday mundane materials are transformed into a capital-M Movie, the film was transcendent. Toilet paper into mummies, pin pricks into gun shots, high school boys into stoic soldiers. 

  Two stars for that.

  There are always clues when a filmmaker is forcing dramatic action where there is none. Multiple scenes of running is one clue. Insisting that spastic moments of manic pixie anger makes a woman three dimensional is another. There is no there there.
