Don't watch much horror, so I may be way off on this, but the impression I get is that the horror scene has moved away from sex in the last 10 years or so. Which is unfortunate because horror and sex are an intoxicating combination.
So it felt refreshing to watch a picture in which horror and sex are (literal) bedfellows once more.

Godzilla Minus One 2023
I'm not totally new to Godzilla but this is actually the first Godzilla film I've sat down to watch. Really good shit, this. Very accessible but also rich, thrilling and moving.
Godzilla's role as a Jesus-like vehicle for national catharsis is so interesting. In Minus One, the big lizard is used to criticise Japan's tendency to valorise self-sacrifice.
I like that Godzilla is not humanised in any way. It is pure monster; the Western tradition might try to build a measure of empathy for it. Even Cloverfield did that to an extent.
