A surprisingly good final twist that managed to elevate this movie significantly. It bounced back and forth between boring and fairly entertaining, and then managed to pull everything together in literally the last minute.

Full Metal Jacket 1987
An incredibly well made movie with a lot to say. Kubrick’s use of symbolism, parallelism and comedy make for an entertaining but somewhat sickening look into the Vietnam war.
The first 50 or so minutes make for a perfect (relatively) short film. But Kubrick doesn’t let the explosive start slow him down in the second half, expanding on the first to perfectly showcase the combat, the camaraderie, and the dehumanization of Vietnamese people. And of course the lack of confidence and understanding in the ethics and motivations of the side these soldiers were fighting for.
Though brutal and crude, the nuance and emotion shines through.

A true masterpiece.
Pattinson’s and Dafoe’s performances are not only some of their best, they might be some of the best of all time. Their chemistry and the way they slowly become more and more unhinged makes for a haunting experience that made me want to watch it all over again immediately.
Eggers’ style is fantastic, and I think black-and-white really suits his movies. I was a little disappointed to see that The Northman won’t be in black-and-white, though it does…
