    "Heil Hitler, et cetera."

I am Jewish. I have had the imagery of the Holocaust burned in my brain for as long as I can remember. The camps, the chambers, the mountains of shoes, the swastika armbands. I was told that this was the worst evil imaginable and that millions of Germans sat by and watched, going about their lives while doing everything they could to simply not think about it. Indifference was the killer, not hate, I was taught.…

I mean I don't want to wax poetic about the power of movies and all that, but this shit? This shit?? This is what movies are for. Dan Dunn is such a fully realized and fleshed out person, thanks to a combination of remarkable writing, deceptively canny direction, and an absolutely transcendent performance by Ryan Gosling. I have a substack now btw! I wrote about Lee J. Cobb in this perfect motion picture. Everything will be free on the substack but if you want to give me money I will love you forever.

Everything about this movie shouldn’t work and everything about it does, mostly because they showed how gay TE Lawrence was. What a picture! So grateful to have seen it in 70mm at the Paris, an unforgettable experience. Also there was a cute old man sitting next to me who turned to me before the movie and said “I just love the movies!” with such genuine exuberance and then said “im home” as it seemed to be the first time he ventured out to the theater since pre-Covid times and I just think we should all aspire to that kind of energy.

    Alien: Romulus

    ★★

It’s a well made, and technically impressive film with some decent set pieces that made me feel basically zero emotions, aside from frustration at a few truly baffling creative decisions. At times it felt like the spider-man ride at universal but for Alien. Like yeah, it all looks like an Alien movie, and it hits all the same notes as an Alien movie, but it’s all kinda on rails (aside from a few exciting things at the very end) and…
